Day 1 of Punk Rock Bowling, Festival Roundup

So life in Punk Lawyer Land has been a bit hectic with work, my apologies for not posting for a while.  To catch up, I’m doing a festival roundup for the festivals I’ve been checking out lately.  This weekend I’m out in Vegas for the 12th Annual Punk Rock Bowling put on by BYO Records.  It’s like a punk invasion of Henderson’s Sunset Station Casino and Resort, with every variety of punk outfits and hairstyles you could imagine.  I was amused eating dinner last night by some older patrons gesturing wildly to a waitress about the mohawks several people at the neighboring table were sporting.  The casino crowd is certainly interesting this weekend, a mix of the PRB crowd and the regular patrons.  Sounds like people are enjoying the poker tournament, though everyone is geared up for the bowling tournament that starts today.  Last night kicked off the music festival, which featured Guilty by Association, Tony Sly from No Use for a Name, Teenage Bottlerocket, Fucked Up, Hot Water Music, and wrapping up with NOFX.  I really enjoyed Teenage Bottlerocket’s set, especially their cover of Youth Brigade’s “Punk Rock Mom” in honor of Mother’s Day for all the moms.  It was a perfect night for an outdoor show, think it’s the first time in a while I’ve gone to a show without getting all sweaty.  Fucked Up put on an energetic set, and the crowd loved it.  I particularly enjoyed Damian’s statement to the crowd, “Look at me, I’m a 300 pound bald guy and I’m up here doing this.  Any of you can do this, any of you could start a band, start a fanzine,” and emphasized that punk is not a scene where people typically just sit and listen.  Motivating words for sure.  Gainesville’s own Hot Water Music put on a powerful set including favorites like “Free Radio Gainesville.”  The scenery of the surrounding mountains as the sun set and night fell also provided a neat backdrop for the evening’s music.

NOFX wrapped up the outdoor show for Friday, kicking things off with “Seeing Double at the Triple Rock.”  Fat Mike certainly demonstrated why he advises not to bring your kids to a NOFX show, as he defined a number of sex acts to the crowd after noticing that a Dad in the front row had his 9 year old with him.  Eek.  Their set continued on with favorites like “Leave it Alone” and “Linoleum”  A fuse was blown at some point on stage, prompting a few sound guys to charge the stage from the tent with cables to try and remedy it.  The band took it in stride, even doing a brief yet funny cover of The Black Eyed Peas’ “I Got a Feelin.”  Can’t wait for the Me First and the Gimme Gimmes lounge set Sunday night for sure.  So that was my Friday at Punk Rock Bowling, I’m looking forward to watching the bowling today, hanging with Florida friends and meeting new people, and of course more music tonight.  The lineup includes Broadway Calls, Old Man Markley, Cobra Skulls, Riverboat Gamblers, Swinging Utters, Against Me!, and Flogging Molly outside with the Revival Tour playing a sold out lounge show afterward.  Get me a Red Bull, it’s going to be a long night.

I can’t believe you were able to attend a music festival for two days and still had time post this. With no typos, nonetheless. Well done. Enjoying your blog.
